You're not alone - workers confess to first-day howlers.
A survey suggests that one in five workers have turned up late on their first day in a new job.
Other first day howlers included kissing the boss "inappropriately", forgetting the company's name, turning up at the wrong office or accidentally deleting vital documents.
One in 25 walked out after having a disastrous first day, according to the poll of 5,600 workers by a leading recruitment website.
A further 9% seriously considered not returning to work after their first day, the research found.
Forgetting company details or the names of bosses were common mistakes, while 3% even claimed they forget their own name.
Confusion and nervousness can cause many people to make embarrassing mistakes on their first day in a new job.
More experienced colleagues will usually see the funny side and our research shows that mix-ups on the first day can endear new workers to their colleagues and actually improve performance.
Gaffes uncovered included a salesman from southern England who called a new manager "darling" because she had the same name as his wife, while a young telecoms worker told what happened when his new employer laid on a welcome drinks party.
"My manager let me stay at his house and I proceeded to be sick all over his cream carpets," he said. |
